Ron Smit is the Team Leader of the Mineral Production Support Project. He originally qualified as a geologist and spent the first part of his career in mineral exploration and ore reserve evaluation, working in South Africa, Ghana and other West African countries.
He has subsequently obtained an MSc in mining engineering (in the field of mineral economics) as well as a Masters in Business Administration.
Since 2005 Ron has been engaged in mining sector development and governance projects, mainly on donor-funded projects in various African countries, but also in Colombia and Mongolia.
He is particularly interested in improving the sustainability of the sector, helping to facilitate reduced environmental effects and increased economic impact. Contracted by Adam Smith International to lead the MPMSP in Zambia, he had earlier completed a short AusAID funded project in this country assessing needs of the mining sector.
